What is TOPS?
TOPS (Talent Opportunity Program) is a program set up in 1992 by the U.S.A. Gymnastics to help identify
talented gymnasts between the ages of seven to 12 years old. It helps the athlete, the parents and the
coaches to identify their talent and to make intelligent choices in their pursuit of gymnastic opportunities.
It gives the coaches access to the best gymnastics authorities available along with other training opportunities.
The National Team is a culmination of State, Regional and National testings that were conducted by the Regional
and National Coaching staff. Two thousand gymnasts start the process with only 80 of these making it to the National
Team. Testings include strength, flexibility, and elite compulsory skills. Glendale Gym has had several girls on
the National Team in the past: Heather Hite, Kara Weaver, Bethany Martin and Shawntae Cline.
